Erik ten Hag has a new headache to deal with after Dean Henderson’s Manchester United outburst

Dean Henderson has not held back in his first media interviews since moving on loan to Nottingham Forest.

The goalkeeper clearly resents how the club treated him since deciding to stay on at Old Trafford in 2020 following his successful loan spell at Sheffield United. He managed to clock up 26 appearances for United in the 2020/21 season.

However, David de Gea has since reclaimed his place and Henderson was only offered three first-team appearances last season. As a result, he is no longer in the picture for England with just months to go until the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

And he is not happy. Henderson described his treatment as “criminal”, saying he “wasted” 12 months of his career. The 25-year-old was later asked which team he would most like to come up against next season.

"It would be Man United but I can't play that game, unfortunately! That is me being honest with you - it would be United," he said in a seemingly vengeful tone.

Some saw the omission of a buyout clause in his loan deal to Forest as a hopeful indication that Erik ten Hag sees him as a long-term replacement for De Gea, albeit the two haven’t spoken since his exit.

However, Henderson’s comments this week indicate that he has no plans for a Manchester United return. It means Ten Hag may have to rethink his long-term goalkeeping plans.

Ten Hag will likely need a younger replacement for De Gea at some point soon in his revamp project. He needs a shot-stopper who can challenge De Gea, if not now then certainly in a few years’ time. Finding a goalkeeper with such talent who would be willing to initially sit on the bench is an extremely difficult task.
