Erik ten Hag gives injury update on Manchester United defender Jonny Evans

Erik ten Hag is waiting to hear how serious Jonny Evans' injury is after the centre-back was forced off in the first half of Manchester United's Champions League defeat by FC Copenhagen.

The 35-year-old was making his fifth start in seven games for United but was replaced after just 16 minutes at the Parken Stadium with what looked like a muscle injury in his leg.

Evans returned to Old Trafford on a free transfer this summer, having been released by Leicester City at the end of last season following an injury-hit campaign during the Foxes' relegation from the Premier League.

He was replaced by Raphael Varane in Denmark and Evans joins Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw as left-sided centre-back options who are now unavailable to Ten Hag, although he is waiting to hear on the extent of the latest injury.

Ten Hag was particularly disappointed as United had started the game well and Evans and Harry Maguire had been developing a good partnership at the heart of defence. They led 1-0 at the time of the substitution and scored again soon after, but after Marcus Rashford was sent off they collapsed to lose 4-3 and put themselves on the brink of another Champions League group stage exit.

“I'm not sure in this moment. He has to come off," Ten Hag said after the game when he was asked about Evans' injury. "I think it was a pity because he was part of it from that good part in the game where we were controlling, very composed and calm, it’s the way I see my team.

"Yeah, but he had to come off and I think still we are in control, still we are leading. So we have to see how bad it is.
