Erik ten Hag explains how Manchester United will use Andre Onana after composed debut vs Real Madrid

Andre Onana can give Manchester United another passing option in defence once he gets used to how the team plays, according to Erik ten Hag.

The £44million goalkeeper made a composed debut against Real Madrid at the NRG Stadium in Houston, showing his passing abilities as he constantly kept it short and helped United build from the back. He also took up advanced positions midway inside his own half, ready to sweep up any danger, and allowed his defence to play a high line against the La Liga giants.

Real won the pre-season friendly 2-0 thanks to excellent goals from Jude Bellingham and Joselu although Ten Hag felt the second, when the Spanish striker scored an overhead kick at the back post could have been avoided. But he was happy with the way Onana swept off his line and got involved in his team's build-up play, regularly exchanging passes with his defenders.

"I think good, solid," Ten Hag said when asked about Onana's debut. "Two very good saves, so he was there in the moment the team needed him, so he did his job, he integrated well in our team.

"This is the first game and detail we have a lot of work to do, the defending part, for the second goal we are not close at the back post, it can't be that a goal can come there. There are rules we have to follow and they will come quick that we integrate into our way of play.

"There are principles but he's a keeper who can be used as a plus one in the back, so we definitely will in our strategy and tactics put that in."

Onana's first appearance of pre-season saw him complete 90 minutes, while Mason Mount lasted for 62 minutes as he went beyond half-time for the first time. The
