Erik ten Hag could target £21m alternative to Christopher Nkunku at Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo was Manchester United's top scorer last season with 24 goals in all competitions. Bruno Fernandes was the only other player to reach double figures and if the team are to succeed under Erik ten Hag then this can not be repeated next season.

One player who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford is Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchman scored 35 goals and registered 20 assists in 51 games last term for RB Leipzig and his qualities would evidently be of use to United.

He usually plays as a second striker but he can also play as a lone number nine, as a number 10 or on either wing. This versatility will be incredibly useful given Ronaldo will likely start up front next season and the team are in need of reinforcements on the right wing.

RB Leipzig want to keep Nkunku, however, and if they do sell him they will want a sizeable fee for his services. This means that United may have to look elsewhere for reinforcements and that could lead them to Steven Bergwijn.

The Dutch winger has been at Tottenham Hotspur since 2020 but has failed to hold down a regular spot on the starting XI during his time in north London. Ten Hag wanted to sign Bergwijn for Ajax in January but the clubs were unable to agree on a fee.

Ajax have returned for the winger this summer but have seemingly not met Spurs' reported £21million valuation of the Dutchman, and this could open the door for United to swoop in. Though he has been unable to make an impact at club level is he a key player for Louis van Gaal's Netherlands side and his performances of late have showcased his talent.
