Erik ten Hag could make bold Manchester United goalkeeping decision

Erik ten Hag will have a big decision in the goalkeeping department to make when he takes over at Manchester United at the end of the season. The current Ajax boss signed a three year contract last week, with an option to extend a further year.

With an attractive style of play, fluid formations with relentless pressing promised by Ten Hag, it will be a different style of play than United have been used to of late. Ten Hag's current side Ajax are on course to win their third league title in four seasons.

One of the key features of the modern day Premier League and also in Ten Hag’s style, is playing out from the back. This is where he may have a difficult decision to make when he takes over at Old Trafford.

David de Gea has been one of United’s best players of the past 10 years, winning their player of the year award four times and looking set for a fifth this season. He is one of the best shot-stoppers in the world but it’s his distribution that may land him out of favour with Ten Hag.

With the evolution of this type of goalkeeper, Ten Hag may want his keeper to position himself high up the pitch when in position — like Ederson does at City — to act as another outfield player to help with passing the ball and maintaining possession.

This season, De Gea has only had a pass completion rate of 69 per cent compared to Ederson’s 88 per cent. In addition to this, Ederson has also made more passes, headed clearances and had more touches of the ball.
