Erik ten Hag confirms further injury boost ahead of Man United run-in after Raphael Varane news

Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Scott McTominay is "close" to a return to action, although the midfielder won't be fit in time to face Wolves this afternoon.

McTominay has missed the last eight games after picking up an injury following the 2-0 win over Everton. It was unfortunate timing for the midfielder, who had opened the scoring against the Toffees.

The Scot provided an encouraging update before United's defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion, posting an image on social media alongside the caption: "Soon." Ten Hag has now confirmed that the 26-year-old is closing in on a return to action.

"It's good news that Scott is on the way back," Ten Hag told club media. "He's made really good steps. He's close, but not close enough to make the selection for [today]."

United will welcome back defender Raphael Varane following a four-week spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury. The Manchester Evening News revealed United were hopeful of his return for the Wolves fixture, and Ten Hag confirmed in his pre-game press conference that he would face Julen Lopetegui's side - although the Dutchman revealed that Marcus Rashford is a major doubt.

"Rapha Varane is back and Rashford is doubtful," the Reds boss said on Friday. "He has a problem, so injury on his leg. He's a big question mark for tomorrow but happy Rapha Varane is back.

"As I say, (Rashford is) doubtful, more than doubtful, so a big question mark. We have players who can score goals and they have the opportunity now to show it.

"Varane is experienced, knows how to win and will lead how to win, will guide us."
