Erik ten Hag can give Frenkie de Jong what he wants at Manchester United this summer

Erik ten Hag could reunite former Ajax duo Frenkie de Jong and Donny van de Beek at Manchester United in the summer.

Van de Beek is currently on loan at Everton after failing to make the impact United hoped he would have at Old Trafford. The 25-year-old hasn't been a regular fixture since his move from Ten Hag's Ajax in 2020.

Ten Hag had both Van de Beek and De Jong at his disposal back in 2019 as they took the Champions League by storm reaching the semi-final of the competition. De Jong announced midway through that campaign that he would be joining Barcelona, though his time in La Liga could be about to be cut short.

United have contacted Barcelona over a possible move for the Dutchman. Should a deal materialise, De Jong could be given a reunion with both his former coach and his former midfield partner. If his comments back in 2019 are anything to go by, it's certainly something he'd be interested in.

"Of course, I feel a bit sad," he told ESPN as he prepared to wave goodbye to Ajax. "Not that I regret it because I am really proud and happy to be at Barcelona, but of course, it’s a bit sad that the team is breaking up.

"But you know that those things are going to happen when you have a season like that at a club like Ajax. It’s just the way it is.

"Those are the best memories. We became champions. What we did over the whole season was amazing. The celebrations were amazing.

"But If I had to name one or two games, I would say Juventus and Real Madrid away, because it was just a big surprise for everyone in Europe. I think the way we played was amazing, really good, it gave people joy.”
