England vs Spain 'offside' goal sparks debate after Euro 2024 heartbreak

Football fans were left debating a controversial moment when Mikel Oyarzabal netted the decisive goal for Spain against England in Euro 2024.

With the match poised at 1-1 and only four minutes remaining, the Real Sociedad striker executed a deft one-two with teammate Marc Cucurella. He weaved through John Stones and Marc Guehi before coolly finishing past an outstretched Jordan Pickford from close range.

However, a section of fans were adamant that Oyarzabal had been offside at the crucial moment. Social media was abuzz with screengrabs showing a marginal call as the Spanish forward latched onto Cucurella's pass - many were at least expecting a VAR review which surprisingly didn't materialise.

One fan exclaimed on Twitter: "LMAO HIS FOOT IS STICKING OUT THERE? ? " while another expressed frustration: "HIS FOOT IS LITERALLY STICKING OUT."

A third lamented: "It's offsideeee," and a fourth remarked: "Wow, that's truly astonishing."

Another argued fervently: "This is R0BBERY .. THIS IS OFFSIDE," and yet another echoed the sentiment: "How that wasn't even checked? That looked offside."

Subsequent analysis with a graphic indicated that Stones' knee had played Oyarzabal onside, validating the goal that ultimately secured Spain their first European Championship trophy since 2012. Some social media users concurred with the outcome, with one stating: "I said it. Never an offside," and another commenting on the defending: "Shambles defending ahahahahah."
