England v South Africa 2022 live: score and latest updates from the opening Test at Lord's

England suffered a torrid morning after losing the toss at Lord's before the first Test against South Africa, who currently lead the World Test Championship.

The touring side's quarter of pace bowlers, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen - the so-called 'awesome foursome' proved too much in helpful conditions and the attack leader, Rabada, struck twice early to dismiss both openers, Alex Lees caught behind for five and Zak Crawley, caught at second slip, for nine after another erratic innings.

Joe Root may consider himself unfortunate to have been given out leg-before to the 6ft 8in left-arm quick Jansen because, when he reviewed it, the ball was only shaving leg stump but he had to depart for eight, swiftly followed by his Yorkshire team-mate Jonny Bairstow, beaten for pace and castled by Nortje for a duck when attempting to drive on the up.

Ben Stokes scratched around for a while before unfurling a couple of handsome drives but was caught off the final ball before lunch, squared up by Nortje's pace.

Ollie Pope, by contrast, was in good form, stroking four fours in his unbeaten 61 and walked off when the long-forecast rain finally arrived with England under the cosh on 119 for six following the dismissal of Ben Foakes, playing on for six.

For what it's worth, as it continues to rain and there won't be any chance of a resumption this side of at least 90 minutes I would hazard.
