England strike twice as Pakistan reach 397-6 at lunch in first Test

England took two wickets just before lunch to restrict Pakistan to 397-6 on the second day of the first Test in Multan on Tuesday.

Resuming on 328-4, Saud Shakeel and nightwatchman Naseem Shah frustrated England during a fifth-wicket stand of 64 before Shah was caught at leg slip by Harry Brook for 33 to give debutant Brydon Carse his first Test wicket.

Mohammad Rizwan soon followed for a 12-ball duck in a session where disciplined England bowling saw only 69 runs scored in 26 overs.

A patient Shakeel, who hit eight fours and faced 133 balls, was unbeaten at lunch on 67, his seventh Test half-century. Salman Agha had yet to score.

Spinner Jack Leach, who picked up the wicket of Rizwan caught at mid-off by Chris Woakes, has 2-79, and seam bowler Gus Atkinson 2-88. Woakes and Carse have one wicket apiece.

England toiled hard for the first breakthrough in the morning as Shakeel and Shah started off cautiously to blunt the second new ball after Babar Azam had been dismissed late Monday.

After only 21 runs were scored from the first 10 overs, Shah opened up with a six off Shoaib Bashir and then blasted another off Leach.

Carse got his breakthrough 25 minutes before lunch to remove Shah and leave Pakistan 388-5. Rizwan fell just three overs and five runs later.
