England's Commonwealth Games gold medalists to be honoured in nod to London 2012 heroes

Team England's Commonwealth Games gold medalists are set to be honoured in a similar fashion to Team GB winners at the London 2012 Olympics, by receiving gold plaques at grassroots clubs in recognition of their achievement. In total England collected 176 medals, which included 57 golds.

Back in 2012, Team GB athletes who won gold at the London Olympics were gifted a special gold post box in their local area in recognition of their sporting achievement. Now England's gold-winning athletes from this year's games will given a similar gold award.

As a result, a gold plaque will be presented at a sports club or venue that has been important to them during their younger years or through their careers which helped them on their way to their Commonwealth achievement.

Speaking on the awards Commonwealth Games England CEO Paul Blanchard said: "The campaign is our way of celebrating the success of Team England's athletes, while also paying homage to sports venues across the country.

From leisure centres and schools to sports clubs and gyms, we want to recognise the role that these sporting institutions and locations play in helping people to fall in love with sport all around the nation." One of England's stars at the games was cycling legend Dame Laura Kenny.

Kenny - who was a two-time Olympic gold winner 10 years ago - secured her second gold medal of her career, after winning the women's 10km scratch race at Lee Valley VeloPark. The 30-year-old has revealed she will have her plaque installed at Welwyn Wheelers cycling club in Hertfordshire.

The Team England star described the Hertfordshire club as an 'important part' of her illustrious cycling career, and added that she was 'proud' to have the plaque installed. Per Mail
