England player ratings: Harrowing Hungary defeat sees Phillips flaws show and off-the-pace Stones see red

England suffered a second UEFA Nations League defeat to Hungary in the space of 10 days, losing 4-0 in their heaviest home defeat since 1928.

Hungary took the lead in the 16th minute after a free-kick routine, which England failed to deal with. Roland Sallai was on hand to put the finishing touches, firing past Aaron Ramsdale.

England had a couple of efforts on target themselves, such as a header by John Stones that was saved by Denes Dibusz. The Hungary keeper was also called into action to smartly prevent an own goal by Willi Orban.

Hence, by the half-time whistle, Hungary still had the advantage, despite England comfortably having the better of possession.

The second half followed a similar pattern, until Hungary made it 2-0 in the 70th minute. Sallai was the scorer again, arrowing past Ramsdale with the outside of his boot.

And it became 3-0 when Zsolt Nagy smashed the ball home from the edge of the area. Chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing” ensued.

Then, a fourth Hungary goal came when substitute Daniel Gazdag got in behind and finished to cap off a memorable result for the visitors.

Several England players were not up to standard, as a run of four Nations League fixtures concluded without a single victory.

Aaron Ramsdale: Did little to prevent any of the goals, having been unable to react quickly enough to get anything other than a skim of the arm on Hungary’s close-range opener. Couldn’t stop Sallai’s second, either, despite it being more towards him, and goal number three flew past him. Provided no obstacle for the fourth. 4

Kyle Walker: Seemed to lack some confidence when approaching the final third. The other way, Hungary occasionally found openings in his right-back territory. Couldn’t quite get across
