England call up 90mph bowler Jamie Overton for Headingley Test against New Zealand

England have added pace to their squad for the third LV Insurance Test against New Zealand by calling up the uncapped Jamie Overton.

Jamie joins twin Craig in a Test for the first time just a few days after hitting his brother on the head in a Championship match. The brothers will go head to head again for a place in the England XI if they decide to shake up the attack.

Overton forced two Somerset batsmen to undergo concussion tests at the weekend, hitting Craig, who returned to bat after treatment, and Josh Davey, who took no further part in the match. If they persist with the short ball to tailenders that was successful in Nottingham, Jamie Overton's pace would give that approach an extra edge.

As England look to manage workloads, Jamie Overton has a great chance of a Test debut at Headingley particularly as they lack pace in their attack. James Anderson only bowled eight overs in the New Zealand second innings at Trent Bridge and Matt Potts has bowled more this season than any other seamer in the country.

Criag Overton had his best Test for England last summer at Headingley, taking six against India, but has lost pace since then, partly due to a shoulder injury. Jamie, by contrast, has added pace to his bowling and enjoyed his best start to the season with Surrey, taking 21 wickets at 21 despite the flat pitches this summer.

Headingley has been a slow and true batting surface this summer so England may well feel they need extra pace to break through. Last year’s Test pitch was a green seamer and Craig Overtoon took 6-32 in the match, but since then has taken only six wickets in three Tests, and been exposed on pitches overseas.

Jamie Overton has regularly topped 90mph for Surrey, finally settling in at the Oval after
