Earlier, Joe Root remained not out on 118 as England declared their first innings at 393 for 8 in the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston. Jonny Bairstow too played a crucial knock of 78 while Zak Crawley scored 61. For Australia, Nathan Lyon was the pick of the bowlers with a fou-wicket haul while Josh Hazlewood picked two. England have declared at a score of 393-8! It seems like the hosts want to test out the Australian openers who have been in the field for 78 overs. This is what Bazball offers us! No one here would have expected this to happen more so the Australians who would have not been prepared to face the new ball for 20 odd minutes. England started off looking to pile on the score from the word go but lost Ben Duckett early. A 70-run partnership between Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley got them moving with Crawley scoring 61 runs in 73 deliveries. Harry Brook looked to keep the scoreboard ticking but was unfortunately dismissed on 32 and Ben Stokes did not trouble the scorers much. Jonny Bairstow scored 78 in as many balls to add the required impetus to the inning but he looked to play one
