Emotional image shows Queen's children standing vigil at her coffin as the public walk past

This is the emotional moment the Queen's children stood guard at their mother's coffin this evening as hundreds of mourners streamed past.

The Vigil of the Princes began this evening, carried out by King Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. The Queen's children mounted guard at the four corners of the catafalque in Westminster Hall.

All were wearing military uniform, including Prince Andrew, who was a non-working royal has been granted dispensation to wear uniform for this moment as a mark of respect.

As thousands continued to queue to see the Queen lying in state at Westminster Hall, some were able to witness the 15-minute vigil which started at 7.30pm.

A similar vigil also took place in Edinburgh earlier this week with some 33,000 people filing through St Giles’ Cathedral to pay their last respects.

Already tens of thousands of people from all walks of life from Britain and around the world have patiently queued for the opportunity to pass by the Queen's coffin.

The queue for members of the public to pay their respects and attend the Queen's lying-in-state re-opened this evening after reaching capacity, but mourners were warned they could be waiting 24 hours with cold temperatures overnight.
