Emma Raducanu "learning to enjoy" gym work as she aims to end injury struggles

Emma Raducanu has revealed she is “learning to enjoy” gym work as she aims to put an end to her injury struggles.

The 19-year-old will compete at the French Open this week after recovering from a back injury sustained at the Italian Open.

She was also hampered by her back at Indian Wells, the Miami Open and Madrid Open, and was forced to retire from her first-round match at the Guadalajara Open with a hip injury.

Blisters have been another issue for Raducanu, particularly at the Australian Open and Billie Jean King Cup.

In an attempt to strengthen her body and prevent more injury, Raducanu has been increasing her time in the gym recently.

“I think it’s something I’m definitely learning to enjoy with each bit that I do,” she said.

“I kind of get that positive reinforcement and I feel really good about myself and each time I feel like even if I do a little bit, I’m getting better and it’s something that I think helps you mentally as well if you know that you definitely put the work in.

“I’m gonna be out there, I’m gonna outlast or be fitter than my opponent on the other side of the court and it’s definitely something that I want to continue.”

It will be Raducanu’s debut at the French Open, and only the fourth Grand Slam appearance of her career.

“I’m learning about my body, for sure, but I’m very happy to be continuing my preparations for the French Open and to be able to play this tournament and fortunately I didn’t have to miss this Grand Slam,” she said.

“That is definitely a really positive thing because I really look forward to these big moments and the big tournaments.”

After a difficult start to the season, Raducanu has shown promise on clay. She will look to translate this into Grand Slam success at the French
