Emergency services stage rescue operation after two-car crash on busy road

Emergency services staged a rescue operation following a crash between two cars in Leigh today (August 2).

Police and fire crews were called to to Wigan Road shortly before 11am. Two people suffered 'minor injuries' and the busy road was closed for an hour as work was done to clear the scene.

According to the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, one person was freed from their vehicle while to others were checked on by ambulance in attendance.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "We were called to reports of a collision between two vehicles on Wigan Road at about 10.55am – two people received minor injuries."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly after 10.55am this morning, two fire engines from Hindley and Leigh fire stations, and the Technical Response Unit from Leigh, were called to attend a road traffic collision involving two vehicles on Wigan Road, Leigh.

“One casualty was extricated from their vehicle by firefighters and two casualties were assessed by North West Ambulance Service at the scene.

“Crews worked alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe before departing after approximately one hour in attendance.”
