Emergency legal measures introduced and 'extra lawyers working around clock' after violent riots

Additional lawyers will be working 'around the clock' to 'ensure law and order is maintained' following the violent riots on the streets of the UK, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has announced.

It followed further scenes of unrest in Middlesbrough, Bolton and Rotherham on Sunday (August 4). Hundreds of far-right protesters squared up to police shields at Middlesbrough's Cenotaph, throwing bricks cans and pots at officers.

One group in Middlesbrough walked through a residential area smashing the windows of houses and cars as a Holiday Inn housing migrants was stormed and set ablaze.

The far-right has drawn widespread condemnation as the organising force behind scenes of disorder in multiple towns and cities in the wake of the killings of three young girls in Southport last Monday.

Sir Keir held crisis talks with ministers on Saturday (August 3) over the unrest, with Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood telling colleagues “the whole justice system is ready to deliver convictions as quickly as possible”.

There was violence on Saturday in towns and cities such as Hull, Liverpool, Stoke-on-Trent, Nottingham, Bristol, Manchester, Blackpool and Belfast which saw several police officers injured.

The CPS has issued a new statement, with lawyers given powers to 'make immediate charging decisions where evidence is in place and this is happening.'

Extra lawyers have been deployed who are 'working around the clock to ensure law and order is maintained, and justice is served', the CPS said.
