Elon Musk to break Man United promise as world’s richest man sets sights on Liverpool

Elon Musk would shatter a golden rule of English football if he bought Liverpool.

The tech billionaire and Donald Trump associate has been linked with the Anfield club following comments from his father, Errol. Musk Snr, whose family has Merseyside connections, has revealed that his son would be interested in owning the club, despite growing up as a Manchester United fan.

Asked by Times Radio whether Elon would consider making an offer to Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Errol initially told Times Radio: “I can’t comment on that. They’ll raise the price.”

But when pressed on whether Elon would want to own Liverpool, he revealed: “Oh, yes. But that doesn’t mean he’s buying it. He would like to, yes, obviously. Anybody would want to – so would I.”

On Musk’s family history with Liverpool, he added: “His grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool, and we were fortunate to know quite a lot of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family. So, we are attached to Liverpool, you know.”

However, that connection didn’t extend to Elon’s interest in football as he grew up following United. Having joked in August 2022 that he was ‘buying’ United, he announced on Twitter (before buying the platform and renaming it X) that the Red Devils were his club.

He posted: “If it were any team, it would be Man U. They were my fav team as a kid.”

Aside from his outspoken views on British politics and his association with the US President-elect, a United fan buying Liverpool would be highly contentious given the intense rivalry
