Elliot Anderson quits Scotland camp to leave international future up in the air with England circling

Elliot Anderson has pulled out of Scotland's Euro 2024 squad.

The Newcastle United midfielder has returned to Newcastle United for treatment. The 20-year-old claimed to have suffered an injury in training today with the national team on Tuesday. Steve Clarke has decided not to aggravate the issue by making him make the five hour flight to Cyprus each way for Friday's Euro 2024 qualifier.

It is a blow to Scotland as they stand on the verge of potential Euro 2024 qualification. It throws Anderson's international future back up in the air. He can still switch back to England as he has still to make a full appearance for Scotland. Anderson, who was born in Whitley Bay, had played for Scotland at under-age levels before he switched to England at under-19 level. He returned to play for the Scots at under-21 level.

Clarke had been trying to persuade him for some time to play for Scotland. Clarke feared he would lose out to the Auld Enemy, before he was a shock inclusion for this double header for Cyprus and England. Anderson knows that if he can keep his place in Newcastle's team and be involved at the top end of the Premiership and in the Champions League then the England door could open.

Clarke now has to decide whether to replace Anderson before his side head to Cyprus for Friday's qualifier. Scotland then take on England in their 150th anniversary match next week.
