Elliot Anderson impresses amid Hearts transfer links as Newcastle boss Eddie Howe hails him amid loan quandary

Elliot Anderson has impressed Eddie Howe on Newcastle ’s pre-season tour of Austria ahead of a decision on his future.

The attacking midfielder played as the Magpies beat 1860 Munich 3-0 as Howe runs the rule over him. Anderson scored with times last season as he helped Joey barton’s Bristol Rovers to a dramatic last-day promotion to League One. He’s a man in demand this summer, with Hearts interested in singing the Scotland Under 21 international on loan as Robbie Neilson seeks more attacking options.. They face competition from England though, with Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town also keen on the 19-year-old.

Whether Anderson heads out on loan or not will be determined soon. The possibility remains that he could stay in the north east to bulk out Howe’s first team squad, and his showing in Austria has done his chances of that no harm, with the Newcastle bass noticing improvements in his game.

“I think he’s done really well,” said Howe. “He’s come back with a real enthusiasm and desire to do well, and show us how much he’s progressed since his loan spell.

“I thought he was probably the biggest bright spark we had during that first half, which was a difficult one for us. I’ve been really impressed by him. He’s quite quiet within the group, but is a very steely, determined lad who wants to do well. We really like.

“He looks like he has the ability now to go box-to-box to compete in and out of possession, also duels and cover ground. We’ve seen a real growth in his endurance levels.”
