Eilish McColgan reveals 'special' Paris 2024 Team GB family treble target as Olympics history beckons

From triumph to trauma then tragedy. The last 12 months for Eilish McColgan has been the cruellest rollercoaster plunging from the very peak of her powers to an unwelcome and then completely unexpected low.

Now though Scotland’s queen of the 2022 Commonwealth Games is ready to start climbing again. With Paris and grabbing a slice of Olympic history in her sights, 2024 is about elevating herself back to this time last year, when the 33-year-old was in the best shape of her life.

McColgan is battling towards full fitness following 11 months out after suffering a knee injury in training as she prepared to make her marathon debut in London. In November her recovery was dealt a further sickening blow when stepfather John Nuttall, the former Olympic long-distance runner, died suddenly from a heart attack.

McColgan won’t allow the pain to derail her ambitions though. Instead it’s driving the Dundonian, who won 10,000m gold on an emotion-packed night at Birmingham 2022 before following that up with a European silver and bronze and setting a new British 10K record of 30m 00.86s last spring.

Her sights are set on becoming the first Scottish runner to compete at four Olympics - beating her mum Liz and boyfriend Michael Rimmer’s record of three each into the bargain.

There is now also a burning desire to cement a stunning family treble as part of a McColgan-Nuttall triumvirate with John’s son and daughter Luke and Hannah both also in contention for Paris.

And, whisper it, but there’s still the dream of making an Olympic podium flickering away inside her head.
