Eight Newcastle players at risk of being cut from Premier League squad after January transfers

Eddie Howe faces a tough decision on who to cut from his Newcastle United squad for the rest of the Premier League season.

The Magpies were the biggest spenders in the January transfer window, sealing deals for Dan Burn, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett, Kieran Trippier, and Chris Wood.

Jeff Hendrick and Freddie Woodman agreed loan exits on deadline day to QPR and Bournemouth, freeing up two spots in United's 25-man squad.

Temporary exits for Elliot Anderson, Matt Bondswell and Matty Longstaff were also confirmed on Monday, although none of the young Magpies took spots in the original top-flight squad.

This means Howe must decide on three players to omit from his current line-up, which would rule them out for the remainder of the season as a result of the Magpies' early FA Cup exit.

It is understood United will submit their final 25-man squad to the Premier League in the coming days, with an announcement expected by the end of the week.

Here is a look at eight Newcastle stars who could find themselves left out for the rest of the season.

The Republic of Ireland international has endured a difficult season so far, and was sent off for an ugly clash in the friendly victory over Al-Ittihad last week.

Clark is one of several defenders who will likely see their opportunities reduced significantly by the signings of Burn and Targett, putting the 32-year-old's place in the squad at serious risk.

Popular among fans, the former Argentine international has rarely featured under Howe to date.

Fernandez missed the Magpies' hectic festive schedule with a thigh injury, but was pictured training with the squad in their mid-season training camp in Saudi Arabia.
