Eguavoen still Super Eagles coach — Peterside

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Idah Peterside, has dismissed rumours that Augustine Eguavoen has resigned as the head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team.

Speaking on Channels Television’s “Sunrise Daily” program, Peterside stated that Eguavoen personally confirmed to him that he has not quit his position.

Rumours of Eguavoen’s resignation surfaced after Nigeria’s 0-0 draw with Rwanda in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Tuesday.

Eguavoen, who recently took over the team after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) deal with German coach Bruno Labbadia fell through, clarified to Peterside in a phone call that he had not resigned.

Peterside also supported Eguavoen’s continuation as coach, at least until the end of the Nations Cup qualifiers, stating that he has stabilised the team and that replacing him now could disrupt the progress made in recent matches.

He noted the politics behind coaching appointments, with agents and NFF officials pushing for their preferred candidates.

Peterside believes that Eguavoen, who has been with the team for years, should be allowed to complete his work, especially given the team’s improved performance in the last two games.
