Eddie Howe's plan on Newcastle United's playing style paused as Magpies close in on safety

Eddie Howe still believes there is "work to do" for Newcastle United before they can declare themselves safe from the drop in the Premier League.

There is now a 10-point gap between the Magpies and Burnley in the last relegation place but the Clarets have a game in hand and will face Newcastle on the final day of the season at Turf Moor. For all that, a home victory on Easter Sunday against Leicester City would all but do it, especially if Sean Dyche's side fail to beat West Ham on the same afternoon.

That would leave Burnley with a mountain to climb but Newcastle are on the brink of safety and all Howe is asking for is focus going into the final seven matches.

After beating Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday night, Howe said: "It has put us in a stronger position but I still think we have work to do. The home games are key for us but we want to pick up points wherever we go.

"I think with the type of game it was it was easy for us to lose shape and discipline and commit too many forward. I think the discipline and responsibility we showed was really good.

"At this stage of the season, it is about results. We are well aware we need to continue to get points."

Howe does not want to get to drawn into perfecting the playing style he wants to use at Newcastle. From day one he has stated he would like to play on the front-foot, but he said: "I think it’s results over performances at the moment. There will be a time when we can evolve."

United's next two fixtures will be at St James' Park against the Foxes then at home to Crystal Palace. Howe wants his side to seize the opportunity in front of them, he told BBC Sport: "You want to enjoy playing at home. I think in recent weeks the supporters have created a great atmosphere. I
