Eddie Howe has respect for Leicester City but insists Newcastle United a long way behind them

Eddie Howe has underlined the importance of keeping his squad's feet on the ground this season - despite pulling off what looks like an earlier escape from the drop than most people predicted.

Howe's side could arguably pick up either their biggest points tally in the top-flight since promotion in 2017 or potentially earn a top half finish if they keep their foot on the gas. But Howe would not get drawn into any bigger achievements other than survival itself.

When asked if recent good form had broadened his horizons at Newcastle, Howe said: "No - the objective is still the same. And that is to remain a Premier League team for next year.

"That is what we are working towards."

Newcastle face a Leicester side that were almost relegated in 2015 before bouncing back and actually winning the title a year later. Once again, Howe was eager to play down any comparisons with the Foxes.

Howe added: "I don't know about them being a template for us, but certainly they are a team that I respect. I am sure everybody else does too.

"You have to respect the way they have gone about building their football club. They have tried to generate and develop a consistent team that will bring their club success.

"I have a lot of respect for Brendan and the job that he's done. They're certainly a club for us to look at aspects of what they have done.

"When they won the Premier League, I don't think anyone saw that coming. The recent history of the Premier League shows that they have backed that up as well.

"They haven't fallen away from it. What they've done in Europe this season and their consistency in the league - all credit to them."
