Eddie Howe has Newcastle United squad aim due to Premier League 'demand'

Eddie Howe wants Newcastle United to have 'a minimum' of two top quality players in each position as they prepare for the 2022/23 Premier League campaign. The Magpies boss has already welcomed three new arrivals since the transfer window opened last month but more deals look to be on the way in the coming weeks.

Howe is keen to bolster his Newcastle squad due to the demands the new Premier League season promises to deliver in the coming months. The 2022 Qatar World Cup will put pressure on top flight clubs who still have 38 matches to play by the end of May 2023.

The Newcastle boss has stressed the importance of squad depth as he praised the added first-team competition that his recent additions will provide. "You need a minimum of two players in each position," Howe told NUFC TV.

"I think the demands that the Premier League will set this year will be extreme, with the World Cup and the fixtures being congested. We're really going to need that quality in every position - and also competition brings out the best in everybody and really does push you to new heights. So it's really good for the squad."

Newcastle have bolstered their defence with the arrivals of Matt Targett, Nick Pope and Sven Botman in recent weeks. Attacking recruits will follow between now and September as Howe prepares his squad for the upcoming campaign.

"I'm really excited to see them [the new signings] in action - unfortunately not all of them are here today," the Newcastle boss added. "But I'm really excited about the new additions. It's important we come back a better team and I think those players will definitely help us do that. They're the right characters and the right ages for the positions we were looking to recruit in."
