Eddie Howe gives candid answers on the two big selection calls for Newcastle United at West Ham

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe admits he faces the wrath of £33.5million man Bruno Guimaraes the longer he leaves him on the bench after his high profile switch from Lyon last month.

But fans can clearly see Howe's dilemma this weekend at West Ham with Joelinton, Jonjo Shelvey and Joe Willock all in excellent form.

Howe has reassured Bruno that he is going to be a major influence in the team, but when asked if he was tempted to start him against the Hammers, he said: "Bruno will start a lot of games for us and will be a huge player.

"I don't think this period where he's watching and learning from the Premier League is a bad thing for him although it will frustrate him because he wants to show his talent."

And speaking about the midfield, Howe said: "It's a really strong area, probably our strongest in terms of personnel.

"Every player would have an argument to say I deserve to start so long may that continue."

It is Joelinton's surprise success story in midfield that means his fellow countryman will probably be on the bench at the London Stadium.

Howe reflected: "His delivery of what we've asked him to do has been excellent.

"Defensively, he's added a lot to the team.

"His ability in recovering long distances, tackling and intercepting the ball has been of the highest level.

"I can't praise him enough and I know there's more to come."

The other big call for Howe is who starts at centre-back should he decide to stick with a flat back four.

Fabian Schar and Dan Burn impressed greatly against Aston Villa on a day when Jamaal Lascelles missed out through illness.

Lascelles though had been in good form before last week's setback, scoring a goal against Everton and putting in a sturdy defensive display.
