Eddie Howe doubles down on 'false' claim made by Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has again rejected the idea that his side are time-wasters ahead of tomorrow night's Carabao Cup clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The two sides will go toe-to-toe in a re-run of last season's Carabao Cup final, in which United prevailed 2-0 at Wembley. Much of the talk in the build-up to the showpiece event extended from Erik ten Hag's comments in his pre-match press call, in which he described Newcastle as an "annoying" team.

He claimed the Magpies, who drew 0-0 on their last visit to Old Trafford, liked to slow games down and time-waste.

The Dutchman said: "It's a great team with a clear philosophy about how they want to play the game. The key word is intensity.

"They do really well, they're an annoying team to play against, so we have to find a way to win. They try to annoy you. We have to make sure we play our game and focus on our game."

United, of course, came out on top in the Wembley showdown, but were well beaten when the two sides met again just over a month later in the Premier League at St James' Park, losing 2-0. Newcastle, despite the scoreline suggesting it was a close battle, made light work of United, dominating the game from start to end.
