Eddie Hearn shoots down Canelo Alvarez vs Errol Spence Jr fight

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has played down the idea of Canelo Alvarez battling Errol Spence Jr in a superfight.

Over the course of the last few months there’s been a great deal of talk regarding Canelo and what the next couple of years are going to look like for him. The Mexican sensation has made it clear that he wants to chase history at every available turn, to the point where he’s even willing to move up to heavyweight in order to do it.

Alas, it’s all about taking things one step at a time in boxing, even if it’s hard not to dream about fun fights that could be on the horizon.

Right now his focus is on Saturday night as he prepares to face Dmitry Bivol with the WBA light heavyweight title on the line. Prior to that being booked, though, a catchweight showdown against Errol Spence Jr – one of the pound-for-pound best in the world – was discussed.

It ultimately didn’t come to fruition and as per Eddie Hearn in a recent interview, we aren’t likely to see it anytime soon.

“I mean, one, I don’t think Canelo would ever box under 168,” Hearn said.

“Two, you have to understand what Canelo Alvarez is all about, which is fighting champions, dethroning champions, fights that poses challenges for him, fights that create history.

“And that’s the thing with a Charlo fight, with a Spence fight — he’d fight them all but I know him and it really doesn’t do anything for him.”

Even if Errol Spence Jr doesn’t get the chance to wage war with Canelo, there’s arguably an even more important fight out there for him: an era-defining bout with Terence Crawford.
