Ebikeme lauds scrabble’s contributions to sports devt

Former President of Lekki Scrabble Club, Adowei Ebikeme, has said that scrabble has raised the standard of sports and youth development in the country this year.

He listed Doko Oluwatimilehin, who became the youngest continental champion at the 2024 African Scrabble Championship in Kigali, Rwanda, as one of the products of the game in the period.

Speaking on the future of scrabble, Ebikeme, who praised Oluwatimilehin for putting Nigeria on sport’s world map, said that scrabble has contributed enormously in projecting the country’s profile in sports with its successes at various international engagements.

He called for more support to help develop the sport at the grassroots, schools and various levels of government, saying that encouraging youths to play scrabble will help to keep them away from vices that are inimical to the progress of the society.

He also enjoined more youths to play scrabble, saying that the sport has the potential to raise their intellectual acumen and financial status.

Ebikeme, who is the convener of the Janet Adowei Memorial Scrabble Championship, thanked the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) for supporting players to win more laurels for the country.

“This year has been one of the best years in scrabble. Nigeria produced the youngest winner of the African Scrabble Championship this year, which has put the nation on a positive light in sports development.

“To continue this feat, every strata of the society has to put hands together to encourage youths to engage in not only scrabble but other sports because we have the talents in the country that can make a great impact in sports,” he stated.
