East Kilbride Rugby Club coach targets six wins to end season on a high

East Kilbride boss Allan Steel has targeted six wins to end their Tennent’s West League 1 campaign on a high, and says an unexpected bonus of Covid chaos has been the emergence of some talented young players.

Steel says they now have a level of consistency in their game, which was shown as they beat Carrick 41-10 at Torrance House.

There are five games left, starting with a trip to Strathendrick on Saturday, and Steel is looking to climb the table from their current position in fifth.

But Steel reiterated that he’s keen to see the back of this season and build again.

He said: “We’ve targeted six wins, that’s one out of the way, so there are five to go. It’s just about performance now, and see if we can finish in the top four or five.

“It was a great result, and a pleasing performance. The boys played well.

“We’re in a situation with Covid and stuff just now and it’s a bit of an issue getting a team together every week. There were a few debuts from a lot of the young guys again, but I thought they were excellent, from start to finish.”

Steel says he now just wants a good end to a frustrating campaign.

He said: “It’s a case of seeing the season out and building. We’ve got a really young squad and you can see through the season that it was inconsistent, as you get with young lads.

“But what we’re seeing now is the benefits of them been playing now for so many games. Hopefully Covid takes a back seat and we can get a wee run of games, get the season finished now, because I think everybody just wants to see it over and done with.

“If we can get good weather and the boys go out and perform the way they did on Saturday then it will be an enjoyable last five games of the season.

“The last few years have been frustrating, let
