EA post Tweet which led to roundtable meetings with angry staff

The admin of the EA Twitter account posted a Tweet last week which led to roundtable meetings within the company and plenty of angry staff. More on the story below.

Last Thursday, the official EA Twitter account tweeted a bad joke about single-player games that has led to absolute chaos. The Tweet was picked up on by thousands of fans who essentially roasted EA which eventually led to an apology from the publisher. Apparently, since then EA are still dealing with angry employees who felt it was an insult to them personally and the games they are making.

A report from USA Today looks a little deeper into the incident on how it came to fruition, the initial reaction and all the aftermath. It really is a chaotic, confusing story that could have easily been avoided with some simple competence.

Here is the Tweet that caused the damage, which is surprisingly still yet to be deleted.

According to the report, an hour after the Tweet was posted, it made its way into EA’s Slack chat, where employees began sharing all the horrendous backlash they were getting from the Tweet itself. Their response was to try and come up with a plan to spin it into a positive.

The formulated plan was to get all of EA’s other social media accounts to begin roasting their own Tweet in order to hopefully draw attention to the various other single-player games they have in the works. Strange approach. This was quickly picked apart by social media managers, rightly so, and that plan fell apart – so they devised a new strategy.
