Dylan Levitt's departure gives Manchester United and James Garner a transfer decision to make

Dylan Levitt is leaving Manchester United and joining Dundee United on a permanent transfer. The Welsh midfielder made a good impression while on loan north of the border, scoring six goals in 29 games and winning the Fans' Player of the Year award.

Levitt was unlikely to ever cement his place in the first team at Old Trafford, despite his obvious talent. Although Erik ten Hag has said a number of players will be given a chance to impress, the midfield is an area he has targetted for improvement in the transfer market, with Christian Eriksen verbally agreeing to join on a free transfer and Frenkie de Jong still the Dutchman's main target.

But what does this mean for United's other existing options? Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek will be hoping to get a new lease of life under Ten Hag (especially the latter) and it is likely that Scott McTominay and Fred will continue as options deeper in midfield. But what about James Garner?

Garner has been told he will be given a chance to impress Ten Hag during pre-season but if after they return to Manchester he can't be guaranteed regular football, he will have a serious decision to make. And it is likely that the departure of a midfielder who is only four months his senior will put some things into perspective for the 21-year-old.

Garner could go back out on loan again; his spell with Nottingham Forest was successful and he was a key part of the side that won promotion back to the Premier League. But he could also decide that there is no clear way into the United first-team squad in the near future and decide to leave permanently.
