Dylan Eagleson and Luke Maguire progress at European championships

Dylan Eagleson and Luke Maguire have progressed through their opening bouts at the EUBC Elite European Men's Boxing Championships in Yerevan.

Competing in the 54kg bantamweight division, Eagleson impressed throughout against Turkey's Muhammet Acli and secured a 5:0 unanimous decision to move into the quarter-finals.

Next up for Eagleson is a meeting against number two seed Gabriel Mascunano Escobar from Spain on Sunday, where a victory would guarantee the Belfast boxer a bronze medal at least.

Luke Maguire also boxed on day two of the Armenia hosted tournament and followed his team-mate through, beating Poland's Daniel Wieslaw Piotrowski in the 71kg light middleweight division.

Maguire also secured a 5:0 unanimous decision victory and will take on number three seed Eskerkhan Madiev from Georgia on Saturday for a place in the quarter-finals.

Light welterweight Brandon McCarthy could not make it a trio of Irish successes, however, and was eliminated from the prestigious tournament after suffering a defeat to England's Joseph Tyers at 63.5kg.

On Wednesday, Monkstown BC's Sean Mari will have a tough task to begin his campaign as he was drawn against number three seed Omer Ametovic from Serbia.

The Dublin flyweight will be first of the Irish boxers in action, fighting in the afternoon session on day three in Yerevan, while team captain Adam Hession takes on Vasile Usturoi in an evening encounter.

Hession is the fourth seed in the featherweight division and is fighting against the Belgium national champion.

JP Hale received a bye into the last 16 in the lightweight 60kg division and faces number three seed, Arslan Khatev from Finland for a place in the quarter-finals.
