DWP warns thousands of over-65s of benefit they could claim before State Pension age

Charity Independent Age has issued a vital alert, cautioning that "lots of older people are missing out" on benefits and additional financial aid they're entitled to, which could help alleviate the burden during the ongoing cost of living crisis. In a video released by the charity online, they highlight the opportunity for seniors to claim an annual income top-up worth £4,200 - four months before reaching State Pension age.

These early claims for Pension Credit, as labelled by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), can be filed in advance of turning 66. This past Monday, Pensions Minister Emma Reynolds reported that, as of the week starting December 30, 2024, there have been some 8,500 'advanced' Pension Credit claims lodged.

Fran McSweeney, Head of National Services at Independent Age, imparts crucial advice in the charity's video concerning Pension Credit applications. She outlines how this benefit enables one's State Pension income to meet the minimum standard the UK Government deems necessary for older people's living needs.

McSweeney further remarked: "Once you receive Pension Credit you're also entitled to extra help with things like the cost of dental treatment on the NHS, the cost of glasses, help with your Council Tax and other housing costs."
