DWP warning as 880,000 households could miss out on hundreds of pounds

Ministers have issued a warning to pensioners and their families ahead of the winter months. The winter fuel payment was previously available to everyone above state pension age.

But last month, the government announced plans to introduce means testing for the payment, as it deals with a financial 'black hole'. It means millions of pensioners in England and Wales, who previously received the money, now look set to miss out on the cash.

So with the colder months fast approaching, a new campaign is being launched to ensure pensioners don't miss out on payments they are entitled to. Around 1.4 million pensioners already receive pension credit.

But according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), a further 880,000 households are eligible for the support. Pensioners who receive pension credit will also qualify for the winter fuel payment, worth up to £300.

They would need to apply by December 21, the last date for making a backdated claim for pension credit, to receive the fuel payment. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall aid: "The £22 billion black hole in the public finances we have inherited has required us to take difficult decisions, but I am determined to ensure low-income pensioners are supported.

"That's why I urge any pensioner, or their loved ones, to check if they could get pension credit. This government remains completely committed to pensioners which is why we're protecting the income of over 12 million pensioners through the triple lock."

Ms Kendall and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner are expected to work with local authorities and charities on a 'pension credit week of action' in September,
