DWP money and financial changes coming in October - including new cost of living payment

October will see a series of important money changes take place.

Temperatures across the country will begin dropping significantly, which may spurn some anxiety around spending money on gas and electricity for heating. Fortunately, a variety of payments will be issued in the coming weeks that may help households better afford their bills.

Meanwhile, a major change to energy bills will be introduced from the start of the month, with a new price cap coming into place that theoretically should see bills be cheaper throughout the autumn/winter period. An urgent warning has also been issued by HMRC over an upcoming deadline that will affect many self-employed people, the Mirror reports.

England will face a ban on some single-use plastics from October 1. The new rules mean businesses such as takeaways, restaurants, and cafes will no longer be able to use single-use plastic cutlery, plates, or bowls.

But there are exceptions to the ban, such as if the item is already packaged or is being supplied to another business.

The energy price cap for the period 1 October to 31 December 2023 will be £1,923 a year for a typical household who use gas and electricity and pay by Direct Debit - this is down from £2,074 per year.

The price of electricity will fall from 30.1p per kWh to 27.35p with the new price cap applying to England, Wales and Scotland.
