DWP confirms full list of State Pension age households due Winter Fuel Payments of up to £300

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has updated online guidance to reflect the recent changes announced by the Labour Government to the annual Winter Fuel Payment.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced last week that the payment, worth between £100 and £300, will only be made to around 1.5 million State Pensioners on means-tested benefits.

The change means that around 10 million pensioners who received the payment last year will not be due the money this winter, reports the Record.

The updated guidance also confirms that people in Scotland cannot get the Winter Fuel Payment, but could qualify for the new 'Pension Age Winter Heating Payment' instead.

The eligibility criteria for winter 2024/25 has also been confirmed. People born before September 23, 1958 in receipt of a qualifying income-related benefit such as Pension Credit during the qualifying week of September 16-22, 2024 will receive the payment automatically - the money is tax-free and will not affect other benefits.

DWP guidance on GOV.UK states that letters will be sent to eligible pensioner households in October or November telling them how much Winter Fuel Payment they will receive.

Most eligible people will be paid in November or December. You will be paid into the bank account your State Pension or benefits are usually paid into.

You can get a Winter Fuel Payment this year if you were born before September 23, 1958.
