Durie's Boxing Club take several victories from successful home show

Rutherglen boxing coach Archie Durie says his 31st home show was a success as a number of his young fighters claimed victories.

The event, held at the town’s King’s Park Hotel on Friday, March 3, saw nine defeats from 15 bouts, with the other an exhibition match.

A packed audience saw 15 entertaining fights, which were broadcast online by Jamie Alexander’s JATV site.

There were wins for 10-year-old Mohammed Dean Khan on his debut, Gary Wilson – who was voted best boxer on the night – Josh McSorley, Jamie Durie and Jay Stuart.

Cambuslang’s Ross McNeil fought in an exhibition match against Chirnside ABC’s Ollie Virtue, who was making his debut.

Head coach Archie Durie said: “It was a really busy night with 15 bouts, a packed crowd and a fantastic atmosphere.

“There were some fantastic fights, and even though some would come back a unanimous decision against our boxers, there were some really close bouts.

“It was good to see Mohammed Dean Khan box his debut bout, he has great potential in boxing – he’s going to be a good one.

“It was also great to see the best boxer going to our own Gary Wilson, with Rutherglen lad Josh McSorley taking his record to four bouts unbeaten.

“Both my grandson Jamie Durie and Jay Stuart got back to winning ways.

“But it’s not always about winning and losing, it’s about learning from mistakes made and to prepare better for next time.”

He added: “It’s our first boxing show under our new home in Blairbeth, Rutherglen, and here’s hoping we start getting some of the lads coming through to box for our club.”
