Dundee want Callum Davidson to be next manager as Gordon Strachan a firm believer

Dundee want Callum Davidson to lead them into the Premiership - after they showed Championship-winning boss Gary Bowyer the door yesterday.

Record Sport revealed earlier this week Bowyer’s future was up in the air, despite leading the Dark Blues to the title with their dramatic final day win over Queen’s Park on Friday night. Bowyer was informed of his fate yesterday morning by Dundee chief executive John Nelms and then the players were told of the decision by sporting director Gordon Strachan. The Dark Blues have told their squad they hope to appoint a replacement by next week and double cup-winning St Johnstone boss Davidson is at the top of their list.

Strachan previously worked with him as a coach when he was Scotland boss and rates him highly. Davidson has been out of work since he left St Johnstone last month. But the 46-year-old will have a decision to make. It is a big ask especially with the rivalry between Dundee and Saints and it also depends on whether Davidson would prefer a return south of the border. Former Celtic coach Gavin Strachan, the sporting director’s son, could also come into the equation, as could ex-Dee Kevin Thomson, Larne’s title-winning boss Tiernan Lynch and former MK Dons and Bristol City boss Paul Tisdale.

The door was opened in typical Cinch style when Bowyer was named as the Championship manager of the year and within an hour a statement was on the club website confirming his departure, along with assistant Billy Barr.
