Dundee United and Hibs say Jair Tavares abuse came from away section but insist it was 'derogatory rather than racial'

Dundee United have revealed how the abuse thought to be aimed at Jair Tavares that resulted in Hibs calling for an investigation came from the AWAY end at Tannadice, with the Edinburgh club accepting that findings of the probe into a remark which they believe wasn't racist.

Footage emerged of the Portuguese star appearing to be called a “black b******” and it was initially assumed it came from a Dundee United fan. However, in launching their initial investigation United said that the microphones in operation for the Scottish Premiership clash Tuesday night were at the opposite end from where the incident took place - near to the visiting support.

And they have now confirmed whatever was picked up came from the Hibs support. Their statement said: “The investigation, completed in conjunction with our counterparts at Hibs and the host broadcasters, included intensive discussions with other stakeholders, focused mainly on the context of the incident. During the course of the investigation, we utilised every available video angle and accompanying audio in an attempt to conclusively prove both where the shout emitted from, and also what phrase was shouted.

"Following feedback from the host broadcaster and analysis of the audio mics available, both clubs unequivocally accept that the shout came from the stand housing the away fans. While there is no conclusive proof to confirm the words used by the offender, all parties are in agreement, based on the evidence available, that the likelihood is the comment was derogatory rather than racial.
