Dundee penalty shout at Celtic gets unanimous Sportscene verdict as Jota incident brings out the rule book

Dundee's late shout for a penalty at Celtic Park was unanimously dismissed on Sunday night's BBC Sportscene.

The Dark Blues wanted a spot-kick for handball against Jota in the box in the final seconds of Celtic 's 3-2 win.

Referee Gavin Duncan was uninterested after the on-loan Benfica appeared to head against his own arm as Ange Postecoglou's side protected their lead.

And he was backed by pundits Leeanne Crichton and Marvin Bartley on the BBC's flagship highlights show.

Motherwell and Scotland midfielder Crichton said: "You can understand why there were claims, particularly at that stage of the game.

"For me, it's not a penalty. He's went up and won the header and almost heads it onto his own hand. He doesn't know much about it.

"When you freeze it you could understand if it was given but, speaking from a player's perspective, I would be really disappointed for that to be given against me, particularly getting the head on it first."

And Livingston assistant Bartley was in full agreement - insisting the rulebook justifies Duncan's decision to wave it away.

He said: "No chance that's a penalty kick. He's tried to head the ball away.

"It has hit his hand, but not every time it hits your hand is a handball. The rules state if it hits another part of your body first, then hits your hand, it can't be given as a penalty kick."

Dundee boss Mark McGhee confessed he didn't know whether Jota should have been penalised.

"I've seen it a dozen times," he said. There was a handball, but whether it was a penalty or not, I'm not exactly sure technically what the rules are.

"I think the claim was it hit someone's head then came back off his hand.
