Dundalk legend Gartland retires from football
Dundalk defender Brian Gartland has announced his retirement from professional football having won five league titles with the Lilywhites.
The Dublin man also won three FAI Cups during his spell at Oriel Park, having previously played with Bray Wanderers, Shelbourne, Monaghan United and Portadown.
Gartland turned 36 last month and said that his decision was driven by a cruciate injury picked up against Shamrock Rovers in April 2021.
He returned to action in a pre-season friendly with Cobh Ramblers in January of this year, but has decided to call time on his playing days.
"I gave it everything. I've loved every minute of it...and I’ve dreaded this day.
"It's been incredible," Gartland said on Twitter.
"I gave it everything. I’ve loved every minute of it...and I’ve dreaded this day.
"I gave it one last shot but unfortunately after the injury the body just can’t get back and stay fit enough to do the job I love."
"After ten seasons at Oriel Park, club captain Brian Gartland, one of the greatest players to wear a Dundalk jersey, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36. Thanks for everything," the Louth club added.
