Dundalk fans to gather amid fears club could fold today

Dundalk supporters are preparing to gather at Oriel Park, with the fear the club could fold this evening due to severe financial problems.

The Lilywhites are seeking investment or a takeover from owner Brian Ainscough due to debts in excess of €1m and the inability to fund the rest of the league campaign.

Dundalk are the second most successful club in the history of Irish football with 14 league titles since being formed over 120 years ago.

Last night, the club warned the situation was grave and that Monday would bring "a critical time" for their existence.

A statement read: "Our owner is in discussions with different groups, domestically and overseas.

"The next 24 hours is a critical time for the club and we hope that we can get a deal done that keeps us going forward. We will keep everyone updated with any developments."

The club confirmed that both players and coaches had received outstanding wages last Thursday.

However, the money was issued to Dundalk by the FAI in lieu of prize money and they remain unable to finance any further salaries without aid.

As well as that there are a number of outstanding creditors as part of their debt, including local companies, authorities and Revenue.

Boston-based businessman Ainscough only took ownership of the club last December.

He revealed last week his attempt to secure further investment had failed and he is unable to finance their outgoings.

Sinn Féin TD Ruairí Ó Murchú has appealed for help for the club.

Louth representative Ó Murchú told LMFM this morning that "you cannot put into words what Dundalk FC means to Dundalk town and its hinterland".
