Dumfries Young Curlers enjoy success at Danish Open
Dumfries Young Curlers Struan Carson, Jack Carrick and Scott Hyslop along with their skip Ross Craik made the trip to Copenhagen to play in this season’s Danish Open.
Rested up after their success in Oslo, this was another chance to try out the new playing order, with Scott Hyslop playing the last stones.
In their first game the boys played against Belgian side Verreycken, with the ice tricky the managed to score a win by a single shot in an extra end. This was to be their best result of the qualifying section as they went on to record two losses. Firstly, Swedish side Westerberg out scored them by one shot before they played Danish Junior side Vilandt, who recorded a 7-2 victory over the Scottish side.
All was not lost as the boys qualified for the knock-out stages through their superior last stone draws.
As one of the lowest ranked sides to qualify, they faced the prospect of not having hammer in the first end on their route to the final, if they were to reach the final.
In the quarter-final the boys took on Team Ribotta from Italy. In another tight game the boys secured a single shot victory to progress to the next round. In the semi-final they were matched against Team Vaderstad (Landelius) from Sweden, it appeared that Team R Craik were warming to their task and they recorded a 5-3 victory to reach the final.
They met previous winners and Danish side Team Krause in the final. With a great start they secured a three without hammer in the first end. The second end saw the Danes draw equal at 3-3 before a two in the third end saw the Scots regain the lead. After four ends the Scots had a one shot lead 5-4. The fifth saw the Danes force a single to turn the hammer with the score 6-4.
