Dumfries bowlers raise £2,600 for charity by tackling Edinburgh Kilt Walk

Tartan-clad bowlers from Dumfries were striding out for charity at the Edinburgh Kilt Walk on Sunday.

The group of 12 from Marchmount Bowling Club joined thousands of other people raising money for more than 800 charities.

The Marchmount Sands Striders set off for the capital to complete the 20.5 miles in aid of Dumfries and Galloway Sands, a voluntary group of parents who have all experienced the death of a baby, either during pregnancy or soon after the birth.

The worthwhile cause was nominated by club members Paul, Claire and Jamie Fraser.

Starting at Holyrood Park, the pleasant weather kept the bowlers in good spirits as they made their way towards Musselburgh.

Pitstops kept them sustained and hydrated and the miles passed by as they went by Portobello Beach and Murrayfield.

One member said: “We didn’t have the quickest time but it was a new best for Marchmount, and we were all there in great spirit and looking as fresh at the end as we did at the start, although we maybe didn’t feel quite that way.

“Sponsorship is still coming in but we have raised an amazing £2,600 at this point. We are so grateful to everyone who has donated either directly or through a raffle at the club and other fundraising activities.

“There were a few heavy legs on Monday morning and a couple of blisters but we all made it.

“What a great effort from all those walking.

“Another great achievement for Marchmount Bowling Club members off the green this time, but what a season it’s been for the club.”
