Dublin survive bracing contest with impressive Monaghan

Dublin survived a bracing examination from a highly competitive Monaghan side to book their place in a first All-Ireland decider since the Covid campaign of 2020.

Vinnie Corey's side, dismissed as makeweights and accidental semi-finalists beforehand, once again demonstrated their stubbornness as they hung with the unbackable favourites until the final 10 minutes.

Leading just 0-08 to 0-07 at the break after an often cagey fist half, the Dubs cranked up their engines in the third quarter but were unable to put distance between themselves and the underdogs.

An inspirational brace of points from Conor McManus left the sides tied at 0-12 apiece with 11 minutes of normal time remaining.

However, the favourites kicked for home in a whirlwind final 10 minutes, with Dublin A-listers Brian Fenton, Paul Mannion and Jack McCaffrey floating over points in quick succession to open up a significant three point gap.

While Jack McCarron clipped over a point for Monaghan, the Dublin cavalry had arrived.

The goal, which they threatened shortly after half-time, finally came with the game won. Con O'Callaghan, quiet in the first half and influential in the second, found Rock with a cleverly angled pass. The illustrious substitute rounded Beggan and forced the ball inside the post to seal the win.

The seven-point win was harsh on Monaghan who emerged with their credibility bolstered. Dublin, meanwhile, are bound for another decider, with several players gunning for an unprecedented ninth title.
