Dru Yearwood: NY Red Bulls man sent off for smashing ball in crowd & injuring fans

Dru Yearwood was sent off after a moment of madness in New York Red Bulls’ MLS defeat to Philadelphia Union.

Philadelphia Union led 2-0 going into stoppage-time thanks to second-half goals from Mikael Uhre and Daniel Gazdag.

And frustration got the better of Yearwood in the dying embers of the match.

The Englishman gave away a foul inside his own half and proceeded to boot the ball as hard as he could into the crowd, injuring a number of fans.

A young supporter could be seen in tears.

Yearwood recognised he had made a mistake immediately and jumped into the crowd to apologise.

The fans weren’t having any of it, though, and did not accept Yearwood’s apology.

The 22-year-old was given a straight red card and was visibly distraught as he made his way off the pitch.

Chants of ‘a**hole’ were belted out inside the stadium in the aftermath, according to the Daily Mail.

“The safety of everyone that attends our events at Red Bull Arena is of the utmost importance to our organization,” a statement read.

“Dru is incredibly remorseful and knows his actions were inexcusable, We will take measures to discourage this from occurring again.

“We along with Dru will continue to stay in contact with families to check on their well-being.”

Yearwood’s statement read: “I want to apologize from the bottom of my heart to the fans who were hit by the ball I kicked at Saturday’s match.

“My emotions got the best of me on this day, and I’ve let down the entire
