Drogheda and Dundalk end the season with dull draw
There were no goals and not all that much drama at Weavers Park as Drogheda United and Dundalk ended a league season that included plenty of the latter with a stalemate.
In Jon Daly's final match in charge of Dundalk, they were good value for a point in their final act as a Premier Division club for now. They might have won the game on the balance of chances in the game.
Eoin Kenny’s late effort crashed off the crossbar and away with substitute goalkeeper Andrew Wogan well beaten. The teenager was making his final Weavers Park appearance for the Drogs before his departure to Stockport County as the club’s record sale.
Aodh Dervin and Sean Keogh had sights of goal for Dundalk in the opening 45 minutes, a half they were the better side in by a small margin.
There wasn’t much between the sides in truth in a game that will not live long in the memory.
Much of the intrigue pre-match surrounded Kevin Doherty’s team selection and whether he would name a strong side with the FAI Cup final to come against Derry next weekend. He did in the end, with talismanic striker Frantz Pierrot returning after a four week absence with a hamstring issue.
His availability in the next two weeks – the Drogs have a promotion/relegation playoff to come as well – is huge for United. Conor Kane, another recent injury victim, made a late cameo too.
Douglas James-Taylor had United’s best effort of the game, but it didn’t require a save from Ross Munro. Adam Foley’s shot after the break was deflected harmlessly wide.
Kenny – one of the shining lights in a season shrouded in darkness for the 14-time league champions -almost provided a match winning moment late on but his brilliant attempt came off the crossbar.
